The mystery &
magic of colored gems: |
|
The world of colored gems
is endlessly fascinating. Since ancient times, colored stones have been
thought to possess certain magical powers. Emeralds were thought to be
good for eyes, yellow stones to cure jaundice, red stones to stop the
flow of blood. At one time it was believed that a ruby worn by a man
indicate command, nobility, lordship & vengeance; worn by women,
indicate pride & obstinacy. A blue sapphire worn by a man indicated
wisdom & high thoughts whereas on a woman, politeness & vigilance.
Emerald signified for man joyousness, transitory hope; for women,
unfounded ambition, childish delight & change. |

Determining value
in colored gems |
|
Color is the principal
determinant of value in colored gems. Color is affected by many
variables that make it difficult to truly evaluate. In describing color,
following factors are the key elements- |
 |
Hue – the precise
spectral colors. |
 |
Intensity – The
brightness or vividness (or dullness) of color.
|
 |
Tone – The depth of
color (light or dark). |
 |
Distribution – The even
(or uneven) distribution of colors. |
|
|
In general, stones that
are either very light (pale) or very dark sell for less per carats.
There seems to be a common belief that the darker the stone, the better
it is. This is true only to a point. Evenness of color & complete
saturation of color are very important in determining the value of
colored gems.
Clarity: Clarity
refers to the absence of inclusions. The cleaner the stone the better it
is. Light, pastel colored stones will require better clarity because the
flaws are more readily visible in these stones; in darker toned stones
the flaws may not be as important because they are masked by the depth
of the color.
Therefore, when we examine a colored stone that looks lively to our eyes
& has good color – not too dark not too pale – we can assume, the stone
is reasonably good and better the value.
Color is the most important consideration, followed by cut & proportion.
The presence of flaws or inclusions does not detract from the stones
value as significantly as with Diamonds. If the overall color or beauty
is not seriously affected, the presence of flaws should not deter a
purchase. But conversely, flawless stones may bring a disproportionately
higher price per carat due to their rarity & larger sizes will also
command higher prices.
Fraud & Misrepresentation in colored gems: In colored gem market,
there is a greater occurrence of misrepresentation than in the Diamond
market, primarily because of the scientifically complex nature of
colored stones. To protect yourself from the more obvious scams, seek
the verification from a qualified Gemologist & more important, go for
the certification of a colored gem.
